Student Technology Requirements


The following information is provided as a guide for parents at Pacific Online Christian School regarding technology requirements at home. While no specific brands or models are mandated by the school, the following requirements and recommendations will assist when deciding on a device and the software required.

We have a portal available where you will find a range of education specific products at discounted prices with additional warranty and accidental repair options. These products have been specifically chosen as they are robust and the most suitable products for the use of students within our school environment.

Software Requirements

All software applications required by Pacific Online students will be available free of charge. Information regarding how to access these packages will be given to students upon enrolment and will be linked to the student’s email account.

Productivity Software

Students will be provided with an Office 365 login  which will allow them to download Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, for Mac and Windows. This will be available for the duration of enrolment.

Web-based Software

Please be aware that there can be differences in experience viewing websites depending on the type of Internet browser used. We require and only support the latest Microsoft Edge web browser which is available for Mac and Windows PC's here.

Learning Management System

An example of a web-based platform used at Pacific Online is Canvas by Instructure. Canvas is our Student Learning Management System. Students will use the Canvas platform for accessing coursework, submitting assignments and blended learning activities.

Malware Protection

Please ensure an up-to-date virus/malware protection package is installed on your child’s laptop.
We strongly recommend that all student computer Operating Systems be kept up to date with the most recent security updates.

Hardware Requirements

Microsoft Windows Laptops or Apple MacBooks are essential (not iPads, tablets or Chromebooks).
The following specifications detail the minimum and recommended specifications for Laptops for Pacific Online students

Windows

  • Operating System: Windows 10/11 Home or Pro (note: do not purchase a device Windows 10/11 S Mode).
  • Battery Life: 3 hours (may require re-charging during the day).
    Recommended: 6 hours.
  • Wi-Fi: Support for 5GHz connections.
    (If unsure, please check with the manufacturer or retailer).
    Recommended: Dual Band Wireless AC or Wifi 6.
  • HDD: 128GB HDD or SSD Storage.
    Recommended: 256GB SSD.
  • Screen Size: Minimum 12 inch.
    Recommended: 13-17 inch.

Macintosh

  • Operating System: MacOS High Sierra or later
  • Battery Life: 3 hours (may require re-charging during the day).
    Recommended: 6 hours.
  • Wi-Fi: Support for 5GHz connections.
    (If unsure, please check with the manufacturer or retailer).
    Recommended: Dual Band Wireless AC or Wifi 6.
  • RAM: 8GB.
    Recommended: 16GB.
  • HDD: 128GB HDD or SSD Storage.
    Recommended: 256GB SSD.
  • Screen Size: 13-16 inch

Additional Requirements

Mandatory

In addition to the above minimum computing requirements all students must have:

  • Web cam (Onboard webcams are fine).
  • Microphone (Most are built into onboard webcam- please check).
Recommended

The following items are highly recommended:

  • External keyboard and mouse
  • Laptop riser
  • External monitor

*When working at home it is recommended students use an external monitor to ensure they are correctly positioned ergonomically.
